 This workshop will look at how healthcare providers can work with patients  to elicit and strengthen motivation to change.

Workshop Learning Objectives
  • Identify the importance of therapeutic engagement, and the role of empathic listening as a skill to reduce resistance to change; to the extent that the Learner will demonstrate at least 3 of the core OARS skills; as evaluated by facilitator and peers.

  • Apply the concepts of the Righting Reflex, Self Perception Theory and the Theory of Psychological Reactance; to the extent that Learners will demonstrate reflective listening skills, EPE, and identify change talk; as evaluated by pre / post test scores, facilitator and peers.

  • Appreciate how change occurs along a series of stages and the importance of meeting the client ‘where they are at’ to ensure therapeutic alliance and reduce change resistance; to the extent that the Learner will accurately identify appropriate SOC on written exercise, real play, case scenario, and real case review; as evaluated by facilitator and peers.

  • Identify the three components of intrinsic motivation, and how to listen to client’s language patterns to identify their readiness, willingness, and ability to change; to the extent that Learners will demonstrate skills  during real plays, small/large group discussion; as evaluated by facilitator and peers.

Accreditation

This one-credit-per-hour Group Learning program has been certified by the College of Family Physicians and Canada and the Nova Scotia Chapter for up to 11 MainPro+ credits.
